It’s a cleaver idea.
And now the art form has reached its apex with the opening of the largest axe throwing venue in the whole of Europe: Whistle Punks Oxford Circus. And yes, it’ll have a fully licensed bar. And yes, the owners apparently managed to get insurance for this enterprise.
Since opening the first Whistle Punks in Vauxhall way back in 2016, the group has added four more venues to their dicey portfolio up and down the country, but they’ve now returned to where it all started with a 7000 sq ft venue on Eastcastle Street. It’s moved into the former home of a Busaba Eathai, meaning that the space has gone from chopsticks to, well, another kind of chop stick.
Inside you’ll find nine throwing lanes, each with its own instructor who’ll explain which end is the sharp one, and marshal you through the flinging process. And at the end of your 70-minute session, they’ll even show you how to pull a few trick shots, too. All told, the whole experience is immensely fun, the learning curve is surprisingly easy, and frankly, there’s something hugely satisfying about the moment you bury the first axe head into the target.

For the post-throw debrief, there’s a sourdough pizza joint on site offering all manner of fancy Italian toppings (including Ventricina salami & artichokes, vegan ‘mozzarella’ & sun-dried tomatoes, etc.), and let’s not forget about that bar – serving cocktails, craft beers, draught ciders, wines, and more…
