Hawksmoor Air Street | Piccadilly

hawksmoor breakfast

London’s most formidable breakfast has finally made its return. After four years off the menu, Hawksmoor’s gargantuan breakfast for two is back, having been tweaked and perfected through months of arduous research and blind taste tests. Each element has been elevated to its Platonic ideal, from the dry-cured bacon chop (aged for ten days in a sugar pit); to the baked beans (with added trotters); to the black pudding (sourced from an award-winning butcher in County Down). Plus, unlimited toast, to plug any remaining gaps in your digestive system.

The Wolseley best brunch London

The palatial setting (a former art deco luxury car showroom on Piccadilly), the silver tableware and crisp tablecloths, and the exceptionally wonderful staff all make The Wolseley one of London’s most decadent brunch spots – and that’s before you’ve even read the menu, which – spoiler alert – has fried haggis with whisky sauce.

Fallow | St James

Fallow, best brunch in London

Fallow doesn’t do brunch on a Sunday – something that the traditionalists might turn their noses up at – but what they lack in conventionalism, they more than make up for with brilliant takes on eggs royale sandwiched between flaky pastry buns (fillings span from sausage, bacon and egg to smoked salmon belly and spinach to salted caramel and whey). Oh, and the hash browns here cannot be topped (unless it’s by truffle shavings).

West London Brunch

Akub| Notting Hill

akub brunch dishes

Do yourself a favour, and book into brunch at Notting Hill’s Akub before you even read the rest of this list. Fadi Khattan’s intimate Palestinian restaurant nails it: eggs every which way but boring, served on flatbread and dusted with sumac, or poached into a rich tomato & green chilli stew. Then there’s the Arabic coffee French toast with cocoa & pistachio, and the unmissable aubergine fatteh where the star ingredient is drizzled with garlic yoghurt. And then, of course, there’s the freshly baked bread and house-made hummus (and why this isn’t an option at every brunch, we’ve never understood).

South London Brunch

This Kiwi-run spot has made its home in an old laundry, but the best seats in the house are actually… outside the house. Every summer the terrace packs out with people tucking into toasted banana bread with honeycomb butter; sausage & bacon brioche baps and courgette & cheddar cornbread with runny poached eggs. Wash it down with a tequila & wasabi-spiked Bloody Maria, or a freshly-squeezed juice… if you’re after something cleansing.

Sourdough leaving a sour taste? Time to get down to Mr. Bao and its, er, younger sibling, Daddy Bao, where breakfast classics are given an inventive spin with flavours from across Asia. Baked beans? It’s one of the more unusual brunch menus you can find in London, and the great-value bottomless offering could see this brunch turning into a brinner…
