Portmanteau.
First used to describe the blending of words by Humpty Dumpty in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass.
A fact which serves little purpose except to say that this Balham eatery can be summed up with two of them: bromance and brunch.
Alex, Arthur and Tasos, three school friends, pooled together their skills to open brunch spot Brother Marcus. With a retracting glass front and hidden courtyard out the back, the café has a comfortingly handcrafted feel to it – given most things were made by the three friends, that’s probably no surprise. And thanks to that modest, independent atmosphere, they’ve since opened two other (bigger) branches in Angel and Spitalfields – leaving them to rename this dinky original ‘Little Brother Marcus’.

Brunch
As well as the obligatory full Englishes (meat and veggie) and bottomless booze, the Sister Special of avocado on toast with all the toppings and The Step Sister – a courgette & feta fritter with turmeric yoghurt – keep the menu appealing to hipsters and traditionalists alike.

Lunch
Sometimes nothing beats a great sarnie, and Brother Marcus can provide. Bob’s Your Uncle comes with pork belly, fried egg and sriracha in a pita, while their house salt beef, cheddar and gherkins make for a very likeable In-Law.
Dinner
The café serves all these delicacies till late, but just occasionally they’ll play host to guest supperclubs, serving feasts spanning the globe. You can see what’s coming up right HERE.
