Ellory | Hackney Restaurant

NOTE: Ellory has now closed, and transformed into Leroy, down the road…

The Weather This Weekend: Friday: ☁️ | Saturday: ☁️ | Sunday: 🌧

Saying somebody has plateaued is, in fact, the highest form of flattery.

For restaurants, it’s probably a Michelin star. Which is good news for Hackney hotspot Ellory, because after just two years of committing to cutting edge cuisine, they’ve bagged themselves one. The restaurant was first cooked up in 2015 by Jack Lewens, former sommelier of River Cafe, and Mathew Young, of Mayfields fame. Their aim was always for a pared back, food first attitude to dining and that’s exactly what you get.

The interior could be the love child of a school canteen and a Bauhaus art installation. Polished concrete, subtle lighting, and neutral tones are suitably East London and combine to create the perfect blank slate for their cooking to shine.

To quote the menu doesn’t really do justice to the creations that await you, because the sharing plates that work their way onto Ellory’s tables are testament to the fact that a dish truly is greater than the sum of it’s parts. The focus of the food is on regional and seasonal ingredients so it changes daily but previous combinations have included cod, white asparagus and morels, squid with lardo, sorrel and tropea onion, and chicory, walnut and Ossau-Iraty. To finish you might be treated to rhubarb and milk ice cream or a concoction of soft chocolate, prunes and hazelnut. If you’re looking for well sourced, artful creations there’ll be something to suit and if you’re happy to sit back and take what comes, there’s always the chefs choice set menu, which hits all the highlights.

The wine list is exclusively European and considering the ownership is mostly sommeliers, they’ve taken their time curating it. Again, like the food, it changes with the seasons so that there’s always ample choice to compliment your food. It’s not all grape though, there’s a number of craft beers and cocktails to boot.

Just don’t peak too early, or you’ll never reach that plateau.
