Hideaway

NOTE: Hideaway has sadly had to close, but is hoping to relocate. Keep an eye on their progress HERE, and in the meantime check out these other excellent jazz bars in London.

Thanks to the eclectic furnishings, ad hoc bars and laid-back nature of gigs, jazz bars can often feel a little, well… improvised.

Not so at Hideaway. Streatham’s crowning glory, it’s a dedicated live music venue that’s been specifically designed with musicians and audiences in mind. Each of its two spaces are packed with intimate, old-school cabaret seating and a stage that’s always in view, scooping Hideaway a number of awards over its near-decade of service.

There’s a busy and varied programme of acts each week, drawn from both the UK and further afield. Drop by one evening, and you can expect anything from Cuban son to British soul, peppered with salsa nights and jazz workshops (Mondays), Sunday jazz lunches, and convivial comedy nights to round off the week. And as the evening wears on, chairs are pushed back and an impromptu dancefloor forms at the back of the room.

As you soak up the music, servers will come directly to your table to deliver a fleet of globe-trotting dishes (red wine-braised duck leg; jerk chicken; vegetable curry) as well as a roast on Sundays. Paired with all that is a comprehensive wine list (including Champagnes and an English sparkling wine) and a jaw-droppingly long list of signature, classic and ‘dessert’ cocktails, culminating in a page or two dedicated to riffs on the mojito.

That is some welcome improvisation.

NOTE: Hideaway is open daily except Tuesdays & Wednesdays, with gigs starting at 7pm most nights. You can see what’s on, and book tickets on their website HERE.
