NOTE: Magdalen has sadly now closed.
Having worked at La Trompette, The Fat Duck and the Mandarin Oriental, Magdalen’s owners – Emma and James – are clearly not inexperienced….
And it shows.
Favouring ‘the robust classical cuisine of Britain and France’, they combine British produce with European fare to create good, honest dishes. Dedicated to sourcing seasonal ingredients from the very best markets, Magdalen’s everything a restaurant should be.
The interior’s traditional and sophisticated: polished dark oak floors, white tablecloths, fresh flowers and twinkling chandeliers reflect the ‘just right’ tenet of the menu. The perfect spot for a classic date that’ll demonstrate your appreciation of the finer things, without the pretension.
Magdalen’s specialities are charcuterie, sauces, and puddings. There’s also an emphasis on getting properly stuck in, so the menu boasts a variety of sharing dishes, like the braised beef and suet pie. Interesting appetisers include fried cuttlefish with tartare sauce or roast bone marrow with snails, garlic and parsley. Seasonal mains include roast hake with salisfy, sorrel, monksbeard and crab butter sauce, or lambs tongues with butter beans and green sauce. There’s also a brilliant range of desserts, like marmalade and whisky ice cream and buttermilk pudding with poached rhubarb.
With salted caramel chocolates to finish, and an international wine list to boot, this is always the place to go if you’re in or around London Bridge.
