NOTE: Mamalan has now closed in this location, but you can still find branches in Brixton and Clapham.
Hating your parents is normal.
That is, until you move out and have to do all your own washing up.
Which is exactly why we’re giving you Mamalan. It’s named in honour of the head chef’s own mother (Mama Lan), who taught her to cook her own grandfather’s Beijing street food recipes. Parents do have their uses, it turns out.
And, already a resident of Brixton, Clapham, Dalston and East Village, it’s now serving up traditional Chinese dishes from a brand new site in Shoreditch.
The restaurant will be an intimate 24-seater with tables both inside and out. Which, alongside the 28 birdcages brought all the way over from China itself, will have you feeling just like you’re chowing down in the middle of a Beijing street food market. That, or a slightly eccentric relative’s house who has or hasn’t forgotten to close the windows.
The venue won’t be the only thing that’s new either. Exclusive to Shoreditch is an expanded drinks menu which, on top of beer and a selection of red and white wines, includes cocktails such as the Bull In A China Shop (Buffalo Trace, rose syrup, lemon juice and homemade jasmine iced tea), and the Beijing Blues (Broker’s, sake, Blue Curacao, lavender bitters, ginger cordial and 7up).
The food on the other hand is holding tight with a variety of Beijing skewers (try the chilli cumin lamb, or the honey glazed chicken), plus dumplings, noodles, and pork/ prawn/ tofu/ crispy chicken buns all available to order.
Now lay down the Fairy Liquid.
