Monty’s Deli

Salt beef is tasty, no matter which way you slice it.

Something that the people at Monty’s Deli are keenly aware of, given that they’ve been serving the stuff to ravenous market-goers down at Maltby Street from their semi-permanent stall for the last few years now.

And now that semi-permanent Southwark stall has become an actually permanent Hoxton restaurant. And it’s a pretty damn nice one at that, smoothly combining an old-fashioned, glazed-brick wall & tile floor look with a sleek, post-modern aesthetic. Behind those scenes, literally everything they can make on-site, they do: pastrami & salt beef are both cured in-house as well as pickles, sauerkraut, and mustard, and bagels are wrapped in hessian cloth and cooked on traditional cedar planks. And all of it goes into,

BREAKFAST

Yes, this place is an all-day-er, kicking things off with extra large latkes topped with salt beef & a fried egg, challah buns stuffed with egg and cheese, and bagel boards set with smoked salmon, pickles and pastrami.

LUNCH

Spitalfields Market Monty's Deli

This is when their now-classic Reuben comes into its own, with slices of light rye stuffed with pastrami, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, yellow mustard, and sauerkraut. They’re also slinging some all-new cold cut platters of house-made meats & pickles, and Seinfeld-style ‘big salads’. Beyond that, there’s,

DINNER

Evenings see them bust out the likes of beef & dill meatballs topped with pastrami dripping breadcrumbs; some cholent (slow-braised brisket with bone marrow, potatoes & pearl barley); and even entire joints of hot pastrami or salt beef for the table. And every night, they’re also offering a traditional Shabbat dinner, filling your entire table with chopped liver, house-baked challah, and a huge sharing bowl of chicken soup.

Washing all that down, you can opt for a snifter of Slivovitz plum brandy, or a Palwin’s No. 9 Kiddush wine. Or not…

…if you’re cutting back.
