Polpo Smithfield

NOTE: Polpo Smithfield has now closed. You can still head to their restaurants in Chelsea and Soho.

Smithfield, as you probably know, is home to a famous meat market.

It’s called Beduin Bar.

It’s also home to Smithfield Market, the last surviving wholesale market in central London, where meat’s been traded for more than 800 years.

Previously the tunnels beneath the market were used to slaughter livestock, but the only things being regularly slaughtered in Smithfield these days are “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “It’s Raining Men” at Karaoke Box on Smithfield Street.

There are already a smattering of great restaurants and bars dotted around Farringdon and Clerkenwell – from Moro to the Zetter Townhouse Cocktail Lounge; from the Modern Pantry to St John.

And now it has another one: Polpo Smithfield.

Polpo Smithfield

A Venetian bacaro – just like its Soho and Covent Garden siblings – Polpo Smithfield shares their red leather banquettes, exposed brickwork and rustic / industrial feel, but also upstages them with the addition of outdoor seating.

The menu’s classic Polpo fare: arancini; spinach pizzette with a runny egg in the middle; meatballs & spaghettini; sliced flank steak with white truffle cream; tiramisu and chocolate salami…

Hmmm, chocolate salami.

And downstairs – past a glowing neon sign – is a secret Negroni Bar, where, enveloped by 120 year old Victorian glazed walls, you’ll be invited to enjoy “the perfect ménage-à-trois of gin, sweet vermouth and Campari”…

Hmmm, menage-a-trois.  Hmmm, Campari.
