Provisioners | Tower Bridge Restaurant
Provisions are – as you’re no doubt aware – the stipulations placed in clauses of the law as provisos for particular, and hypothetical, outcomes.
Also, food.
And seamlessly combining the two is Provisioners, a new restaurant making its home within the former Tower Bridge Magistrates Court.
Set a stone’s throw away from the bridge itself, it’s the brainchild of restaurateur Clive Watson, housed in the glamorous new boutique hotel, The Dixon.
It’s set in a light, airy and sprawling space with washes of soft pinks and dark, velvety teal accents. To the right, you’ll spot the café-style area with low stools and counter seating, where you can score cakes, pastries and Shakedown coffee by day, and wines and charcuterie boards by night. But to the left is where the spacious main restaurant unfolds, with Bauhaus-inspired touches, terrazzo surfaces and buttery soft banquette seating interspersed with original features from its time as the court’s holding bay (one of the cell doors is now left open to reveal the in-house roastery).
After years of running the crowd-pleasing Riding House Café, Watson knows what the people want – and that’s casual, all-day dining with comfort food classics dressed up to the hilt. To kick off the day, there’s The Works (with eggs, Toulouse sausage, black pudding, back bacon and bubble & squeak) balanced with a Vegan Fry-Up; easing slowly into lunch with oxtail croquettes and moûles marinières, butcher’s steak and strapping great sandwiches.
Come the evening, you can turn your attentions to the culurgiones (Sardinian dumplings) with truffle and pecorino; 8-hour lamb shoulder; and ‘Duck, Duck & Duck’; a trio of Shanghai master-stock leg pie; roast duck breast and duck liver parfait… before squeezing in a sticky toffee pudding with white espresso ice cream, and retiring to the Courtroom Bar – a sunken marble drinking den in the original courtroom, with a cocktail bar set beneath the Judge’s crested oak canopy. Here, you can see out the evening with an absinthe-laced negroni and a Disco Whiskey with coffee and Chambord… or three.
No one will judge you.
