Things To Do

Roofnic

Roofnic | Mayfair Rooftop Bar

Let’s all go to Roofnic: 1,800 square feet of rooftop bar space now perched atop the Marriot Hotel.

Peacefully overlooking the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street below, it contains a 1957, baby blue kitchenette purchased from an old lady in Plymouth for £2; tables and chairs from a 1960s Scandinavian school; reclaimed theatre lights from Brixton; wooden palates and makeshift cubby houses from a variety of London workshops; plus magnetic blackboards on which you can write rude (and polite) messages with fridge magnet letters.

The food comes in makeshift picnic boxes from the hotel kitchen downstairs, and is based around a menu of shareable small plates like pulled pork and beef tacos; homemade quiches and pies; salads of sweet potato, chipotle peppers and blueberries; and peanut butter jelly cookies. And to wash it all down there are juices, coffee, wine, local craft beers and a small selection of strong, pre-made cocktails.

But in order to enjoy all of this you’ll need to:

1) Wait for it to be sunny, and then

2) Know how to get up there.

Regarding that second point, you simply need to seek out the AstroTurf-adorned entrance at the Marble Arch end of Oxford St, knock twice – or as many times as you like, it’s irrelevant – and then walk up to the roof.

A nice reminder, if one were ever needed, that the maxim “Nothing Worth Doing Is Easy” is… wrong.
