Food & Drink

NOTE: Summers has now closed.

They used to just serve toasts.

But thanks to the gastro-revolution, nowadays getting excellent food in a pint-palace is actually not too uncommon at all. Something that’s only further evidenced by the Sir Colin Campbell pub in Kilburn who – after a fresh refurb – have opened up their upstairs space to ex-St. John chef Ruairidh Summers for his self-titled debut restaurant.

The place looks suitably pub-like, with wooden furniture, an unvarnished wooden floor, and a bare-brick chimney breast jutting out into the room and showing off its cast iron fireplace. It’s from here that you’ll be getting the food, which in keeping with the chef’s own heritage, is predominately Irish.

You can expect easy drinking snacks like house pickles or West Mersea Rock oysters, as well as more challenging traditional numbers like crubeens (boiled pigs feet that’re then battered and fried). The starters extend to wild nettle soup; soused mackerel with horseradish; white pudding with beer mustard; and devilled crab on toast.

Sizing up again, the main courses see brill with samphire & clams; cider-brined saddleback pork with tarragon; and a beef shin & Guinness pie for two. And for dessert? There’s a dark treacle tart, a baked rice pudding, and a plate of Irish cheeses.

Being that this is a pub, there is naturally plenty to drink. And if you head down for an early dinner, you can head to the bar after your meal for a “glass of Black Velvet on us”.

We’ll toast to that.
