Cobalto is Italian for cobalt, the ultramarine blue that sweeps across the back of this wine bar in a glossy, menu-scrawled mosaic.
Which is fitting, because this is a great spot for a night on the tiles.
It opened quietly in Fulham just at the end of 2024, and has already established itself as a resolute hit with the locals. And if you’re within even a 15 mile radius of the place, it’s worth getting down there – particularly because Nudge Members (+1) are getting 50% off drinks between 6pm-9pm, from 11th January until the end of February.
Cobalto’s part bar, part bottle shop, with dozens of hand-picked natural wines lining the industrial steel shelves. Like co-founder Elia, they mostly hail from Italy (with a few French interlopers), sourced directly from organic and biodynamic vineyards across the country.
Choose to stay in, and you can uncork any of these bottles, or pick something from the ‘by the glass’ selection which rotates weekly (two reds, two whites, two oranges and a sparkling). Elia will happily point you in the right direction, and his passion for wine is infectious – not that you’ll need much persuading. These wines all speak for themselves.
As the night wears on, the lights dim and the candles are lit, you might find yourself gravitating from wine to one of Cobalto’s cocktails. They do well-made classics like negronis, martinis and mezcalitas. There’s even (gasp) beer.
There are also plans to scale up the food menu, but for now there’s a ravishing array of fancy Italian produce and seasonal British ingredients – some sourced from London’s urban farms – making their way into chic platters of artisan cheese and charcuterie, like smoked pork shoulder from Parma and aged Venetian Asiago cheese.
They might even have a blue.
