When Hacha first arrived on the scene back in 2019, it immediately and effortlessly elbowed its way to the top of the city’s best agave bars, spear-tipping the mezcal gold rush, and swiftly winning hearts, minds, and actual awards for its hypnotically transparent (and verrry drinkable) Mirror Margaritas.
Well, now it’s outgrown its Brixton home and has moved its entire operation to the handsomely spacious climes of Bermondsey’s Tower Bridge Road… and Nudge Members (plus a lucky guest) are getting in for a secret soft launch, with 40% off drinks from 8th–22nd March.
The space they’ve nestled into is an open, airy, and light volume propping up the Locke hotel. It’s a slick-yet-relaxed combination of both modern industrial chic elements (like its abundant exposed piping and concrete fittings) and softer touches of greenery and terracotta that give it all a feeling of organic warmth. All told, it has space for close to 100 cocktail-wielding punters, with a terrace to come when the sun decides to make its mid-year cameo.
On the drinks list, there are naturally dozens upon dozens of craft tequilas & mezcals, pretty much all of which are eminently sippable on their own, but will also pour nicely into the cocktails too. Ask your barkeep, and they’ll deftly help navigate the seemingly endless sea of options for you.
And speaking of experts, the cocktail menu has been drawn up by Deano Moncrieffe, who can stake a claim to being one of London’s most highly regarded agave authorities. Among his new concoctions, you’ll find The Bermondsey Batanga (with spiced purple carrot cordial, calamansi, and smoked salt) and the Twenty, which blends marigold-infused tequila/mezcal with banana, white Port, Botivo, and wild pine forest soda. And, of course, they’re still slinging the Mirror Mags – because if you’re going to make a drink disappear, it might as well already be invisible.
Nopalito, the taco whisperers from Brixton, have made the move over too and are serving up the likes of golden, crackling chicharrones with smoky salsa roja, and a spread of street tacos, from classic el pastor to slow-braised crispy birria, to the eponymous cactus-loaded nopalito. They’re very moreish, but their real beauty is in the fact that they’re almost all handheld, which makes them the perfect cocktail bar food.
And the kicker? Hacha’s giving back to the community too, having created a non-profit organisation called Equal Measures that provides training, mentorship, and workshops to the local BAME community.
We’ll raise a glass to that…
