Sager + Wilde | Hackney Wine Bar
This regards what is arguably the best date spot in London.
Understandably – being the romantic you are – you may have some burning questions as to its nature; please allow us to preemptively field them.
Why is it called Sager + Wilde? Ah, that’s because it’s owned and run by Michael Sager and Charlotte Wilde, now both Sager-Wilde’s. Who after having their wine epiphany while working in California at RN74 and Bar Tartine, decided that London was evidently missing a selection of only the best wines from The Golden State, and a small, intimate, unpretentious and unintentionally romantic bar in Hackney to house them.
Do they serve food? There are small plates, charcuterie, cheeses and what are quite possibly two of the best toasted sandwiches in existence: a cheddar and spring onion melt and a salami toscano, cheddar and leek toasties.
Is it first date material? It’s every date material.
And cocktails, do they do those as well? Not really, it’s all about the wine here. But they do at their sister venue, Sager + Wilde Paradise Row. And they come courtesy of Michael, who actually began his London hospitality career at Milk and Honey.
Do they know much about wine? In short: yes. At length: yes, yes they do. And you can get almost every wine by the glass when ordering over the reclaimed cast iron cellar door bar. Their ethos is simple: fine wines with generous margins.
Does the lighting make me look slightly more attractive that I would normally? Yes it does.
In one sentence, why should I go? Because Sager + Wilde is one of the only places in London you can get exceptional quality Californian wine from sommeliers who know a lot about it in a cozy date-spot worthy setting that comes with no snobbery; it’s the real deal.
Will you be my wingman?
