Telli’s | A Pop-Up Bar in a Butcher’s
Stella’s is a fantastic little butcher’s shop on Newington Green.
Run by the sustainably-minded folk at The Small Herd (who are also behind Hill & Szrok on Broadway Market), it has everything you’d hope for in a neighbourhood chop shop: generous cuts of meat from ethically-reared animals, whole carcasses (where they’ll lop off any other cut you can’t see on the counter)… and an after-hours transformation into a neon-soaked speakeasy cocktail bar.
Taking over from where the vinyl-led pop-up bar System left off, Telli’s opens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, slinging top-quality drinks and doorstopper sarnies. Head down from 7pm, and you’ll find the butcher’s counter has been converted into a bar, across which they’re sliding natural wines, local beers, and impeccably constructed classic cocktails, from a tall Tom Collins to the Sidecar. And, being a butcher’s, the snacks are absolutely A-grade: you can get some freshly sliced charcuterie from their deli counter, or one of those blockbuster sandwiches (try the cubano with Stella’s slow-roasted pork shoulder). There’s even little slices of baklava for dessert, made to a family recipe.
And aside from the drinks and sarnies themselves? The atmosphere is absolutely electric in here, helped in no small part by the charismatic ‘tenders (and, of course, the enormous illuminated pig signs hanging in the windows).
In short: next time you’re in the area, it’s well worth having a butcher’s.
NOTE: Telli’s takes over Stella’s on Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights from 7-11pm. There are no reservations, just turn up.
