There’s the wrong horse.
And then there’s The White Horse.
It’s a classic neigh-bourhood (geddit?) boozer balancing on the tip of Peckham Rye Park, and it comes with all the trimmings you’d want from a good pub: the Tudor-style building is striped in classic black timber, loaded with pool tables and darts boards, there’s a great beer garden out back, lovely wooden floors (no sticky carpets! Huzzah!), and there’s even a picture of an actual white horse up on the walls.
But that’s not what makes it great. That would be every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night, when they pull back the furnishings on those wooden floors, set up the DJ booth, throw some light onto the glitter ball, and have a disco. It’s a lot of fun.

Of course, during the week, they still do the normal pub things. There’s a great selection of craft beers, in fact, they even make their own – a Parched Pale, produced with the help of Orbit Brewery just down the road. You’ll also find Old World wines, and even a cocktail bar in the back serving up frozen margs in the summer.
Food-wise, they’re one of the many pubs that open up their kitchen to guest residencies. The current tenant is Original Flava, who’re gracing the kitchen Tuesday to Sunday and capping off the week with glorious Caribbean-British roasts. We’re talking 24 hour-marinated jerk chicken, lamb & cauliflower, or curry goat, with all the trimmings: yorkies, roast potatoes, rice & peas, veg, and gravy. Plus rum BBQ chicken wings on the side, if you fancy.
And, last but not least, if you pop down to The White Horse in the warmer months, they also have a regular program of live jazz in that beer garden. Settle in for a cold drink on a hot day while the music plays…
…and that’s when you know you’ve backed the right horse.
