Tonica By The Distillery | Exmouth Market Bar
Exmouth Market. Home to Panzo, Berber & Q Shawarma Bar, Caravan, Moro…
And, in what has hitherto felt like a dangerous disregard for the delicate ying and yang of food and drink establishments, very few bars by comparison.
Luckily, we have just the Tonica.
Or rather, The Distillery does. Because after the heady and entirely inevitable success of opening London’s first gin hotel – which also contains a museum, their own distillery, your own distillery and 3 bars – they’re opening a place further east.
That place is Tonica, a spin-off of their Notting Hill 1st floor bar, GinTonica. It’s a spacious yet intimate feeling affair, coupling vibrant wall tiles and abstract artwork with cascading plant hangers surrounding multiple skylights, below which you’ll be able to clink G&T Pluses (supercharged with tinctures, jams, and all manner of unusual garnishes) over delicate tapas dishes from executive chef Greg Lewis.
You’ll also be able to taste the fruits of the labours of Copernicus the Second, an eccentric distiller who is locked in the basement and works tirelessly on producing the in-house gin (which is okay, because he’s a tank. Literally), married with the mixology expertise of master distiller and bartender Jake F Burger, who selflessly gave nominative determinism a kick in the shins in order to bring you avocado vodka and butter gin (both of which you can sample at the bar).
It’s exotic, it’s romantic… but most importantly, you’re finding out about it just before your next date night.
It must be fate.
NOTE: Tonica is set to open in Exmouth Market in mid April. Sign up on their website HERE and you’ll be the first to hear about their soft launch, which will include 50% off food.
