Vinum Bar | An Intimate Subterranean Wine Bar in Mayfair

Amethyst is a gem of a place.

It was one of the best restaurants to open in 2022 (and which honestly serves spectacularly good food), and now it also boasts an intimate 16-seater subterranean wine bar below it called Vinum.

You’ll enter Vinum from the restaurant itself, first finding the innocuous fronting on a Mayfair side street. What is inside is a fairly spectacular sight: a 10-metre long, jagged chef’s table shot through with rivers of real amethyst & quartz stone. Wander past that, and down the stairs, and you’ll come to a cosily inviting, low-lit wine cavern filled with earthy, chestnut-brown tones and a simple rustic bar. There are just 16 seats in total, but its small size only adds to its intimacy and buzzing atmosphere.

As for the vinum itself? Well, the man behind this whole operation, chef Carlo Scotto, has dipped into his extensive travel portfolio and pulled out a truly global wine list, with bottles from Old World, New World, and the emerging grape-rich worlds of Greece and India. They’re being poured into innovative flights by Head Sommelier Ennio Pucciarelli or simply served up by the glass or bottle. You can also dip into Amethyst’s expensive cellar for rare & vintage finds too, which is – in good news for your wallet – available by the glass.

Then there’s the food. It just so happens that there’s an immensely talented chef with an award winning kitchen a few yards away, so that helps. They’re putting out the likes of homemade bread with Tête de Moine cheese & saffron caramel; Japanese scallops with wasabi caviar & teriyaki; and truffle arancini with parmesan cheese & gochujang mayo.

And yes, believe it or not, they can all be expertly paired up with the wine menu.
