A Right Royal Knees Up

A Right Royal Knees Up | Pop Up Theatre

We’ve had some complaints.

Sure, we nail it when it comes to new bars and restaurants.

But apparently we don’t cover nearly enough cockney-themed-semi-immersive-pop-up-experiences that centre around wedding receptions in old school East-end boozers.

Truly, they’re one of the cornerstones of London’s nightlife. So please allow us to introduce: A Right Royal Knees Up.

Bought to you by the cousins / geniuses behind The Blue Lotus Opium Den and The Mile High Club, it’ll take place downstairs at Carousel, which for four evenings towards the end of April will become an old school Bethnal Green pub and dance hall (in 1969) overflowing with food, drink and live music, and populated by gangsters, wide boys, gossips… and you.

After securing tickets you’ll be sent a wedding invitation. Thereafter your evening will commence before you even enter the premises, thanks to:

The Market

Around the back of Carousel’s main building you’ll find market stalls, wheeler dealers, snack vendors and a chance to pick up discounted wedding presents that “fell off the back of a lorry”. After that, you’ll head downstairs into:

The Pub

Where you’ll immediately be presented with a welcome cocktail. Which is nice. There’ll be someone playing music-hall style tunes on the piano, characters freely mingling with guests, and bar food put on by ex-Moro chef Ollie Templeton (think: Scotch eggs and crackling, with modern twists). As the storyline begins to unfold – complete with tantrum-throwing bridesmaids and a smouldering family feud – you’ll then make your way through to:

The Dancehall

It’s here, understandably, that people will be dancing. There’ll be a live band, wedding speeches (further expanding the storyline), and yet more food in the form of resurrected and modernized classics like bangers and mash, steak and kidney pie, cockles, and more. Of course, all of this will be washed down with an array of authentic tipples, including a twist on that old cockney favourite, Port and Lemon.

So no complaints there, then.

NOTE: A Right Royal Knees Up by Shuttlecock Inc. runs from Tuesday 26th – Friday 29th April, from 7pm – 12am. Tickets (which you can buy on this page, below) cost £38 + booking fee and include…. a welcome cocktail, live music, immersive entertainment and bar snacks all evening long.
