Hen Party By Check On

Hen Party By Check On

The Sunday Roast.

A much-loved, quintessentially British tradition dating back to the industrial revolution, it’s like an old grandma that’s just always been there: an unflinchingly constant presence, sitting quietly in the corner, watching as the world evolves around her… and giving away handfuls of Werther’s Originals to anyone who walks past.

But – like every grandma out there – the Sunday Roast secretly wants to dance.

Which is why we’ve been searching for someone to take it by the hand, and do something surprising with it. You know, mix it up a little; spin it around a bit; ruffle its feathers and hell – maybe even inject a little “Heston Blumenthal” into it…

Figuratively-speaking.

Well, good news: we’ve found that “someone”. They’re called Check On, and they’re the culinary equivalent of Batman and Robin: a Northern duo who, together – hot off the heels of their sold out pop up at Patty & Bun – are bringing a mind-bending, chicken-themed Sunday Roast to Soho for two Sunday afternoons (on 24th March, and 7th April *update* these dates have now sold out, so 2 more dates have been added).

The menu, created by ex-Hix chef Terry (Batman) Edwards – and costing £30 for 4 courses – begins with three chicken dippers: one confit with smokey BBQ sauce, one deep fried, one stuffed with livers with crispy chicken salt; all of them stripped back, up-ended, and served like lollipops.  Next up, tea (a brown chicken consommé served in one big tea pot for the table) and dumplings (served in large tea cups), followed swiftly by the main event: a whole, and fully-intact, roasted chicken which – you’ll note as you begin to carve – has already been completely de-boned.

Clever…

And then on to dessert, with an alternative take on “Eggs & Soldiers” in which hollowed out hens’ eggs will be carefully filled with vanilla creme brûlée, and served alongside shortbread soldiers.

…and sneaky.
