Sunday Dinners | The Dolls House
You can buy a lot for £25 these days.
Not so in London, though. Which is why paying that exact amount to attend Check On’s latest wheeze – a series of elaborate four-course ‘Sunday Dinners’ (which is Northern for ‘Sunday Lunches’) inside private Hoxton club The Dolls House – is such a boon.
Yes, you could buy Sunday Lunch for £25 in lots of places.
However what sets this apart – beyond the fact that you’ll be dining inside a life-sized dolls house where furniture, windows and clocks are etched on to the walls, and where the company of Check On’s friendly crowd will amply satisfy your desire to enjoy ‘An Experience’ as opposed to just ‘Lunch’- is the fact that your chef will be Check On’s very own Terry Edwards.
Trained under the watchful eye of Mark Hix, Terry (who at 28 years old is officially 30 years younger than he sounds) has created three innovative menus based around either chicken (Hen Party), pork (Pigsaw) or beef (Beefeater).
Attend Hen Party and your four courses will include Check On Nuggets served in McDonald’s-style boxes with Bloody Mary ketchup; Goosnargh corn-fed chicken breast stuffed with sage and rolled into a cylinder; and a lemon-fest to finish. Attend Pigsaw to try Terry’s pre-rolled and “glued” loin and belly of Gloucestershire Old Spots Pig with old school toffee apples, followed by – um – black rice pudding with spiced poached rhubarb, caramelised milk and vanilla fudge. Or head along to Beefeater for roast beef with oversized Yorkshire puddings, truffled roast potatoes and then dark chocolate mousse, candied hazelnuts and chocolate polenta cake for dessert.
It’s going to be good, by ecky-thump.
Which is Northern for ‘It’s going to be good’.
NOTE: Check On’s Sunday Dinners is happening every Sunday at The Dolls House from now until the middle of March 2014.
