London, 1877.

The first Wimbledon Tennis Championship takes place.

At a croquet club.

The players all wore hats, ties, and heeled shoes. There were just 200 spectators, and the total profits were £10. Which they used to fix some broken mallets.

…And you can go back to visit those heady days right now, thanks to The Time Portal. It’s an immersive, fun-laden experience that comes to us courtesy of a slick collaboration between theatre gurus Les Enfants Terribles (The Game’s Afoot, Alice’s Adventures Underground, etc.) and the effects studio behind the Oscar tractor-beam that was the movie Gravity.

The experience itself is housed in a stunning warehouse conversion, wherein they’ve used all their effects cunning and trickery to faithfully recreate the smoggy streets of Victorian London, including its inhabitants (yes, that means Jack The Ripper, dazzling magicians, and a cast of similarly famed and colourful Victorians). You’ll be in there for 40 minutes, give or take, as you navigate your way towards the new tennis tournament with their help. And to reveal precisely what happens would spoil an incredible surprise… suffice to say though, there will be beer (two drinks are included in your ticket, regardless).

When it’s over, you can step back into the 21st Century as they decant you into their very modern beer bar that marks the end of the experience, where you can watch this year’s Wimbledon on a good ‘ol big screen.

That’s game, TV set, and match.

NOTE: The Time Portal takes place from 7th-10th July at 76 Stoke Newington Road, Dalston, N16 7XB. Tickets are priced between £13.50 – £18, and are available right HERE
