Callooh Callay | A new cocktail menu from one of the world’s best bars
Sure, a lot of bars release new cocktail menus all the time.
It doesn’t seem like it’s a big deal.
But this is Callooh Callay.
And not only have they been consistently ranked on the World’s 50 Best Bars list, but they’ve literally won a Spirited Award (basically the Oscars for bars) for having the best cocktail menu on earth. So when they release a new booze bible, it’s worth paying attention.
Some of their previous cocktail compendiums have been inventively styled like IKEA instructions, Pantone catalogues, and even Panini Sticker books complete with stickers for each of the drinks you tried. And – novelty aside – those drinks have been uniformly fantastic too.
For their latest, they’ve looked to the classic Haynes Manuals of the 1980s for inspiration, putting together a bar manual that sticks closely to the Haynes layout & design, complete with detailed cross-section-style graphics, a table of contents listing each drink, and even an index of ingredients at the back.
It lists 26 cocktails in all, all divided into 9 sections that each relate to one of the stages of developing a cocktail bar from scratch; it’s the 10th anniversary of Callooh Callay’s opening, so they’re getting nostalgic. In fact, each bartender has at least one drink they’ve personally developed included. Chapters include:
The Plan – giving a nod to his granny (who provided seed money to get the whole operation off the ground), founder Richard Wynne has created a cocktail called Nan’s Orchard, which blends apple cider brandy with pisco, ginger cordial, and apple pie syrup.
The Build – in homage to the construction workers who literally put the place together, they’ve created The Builders Breakfast, a rum-based concoction laced with tea syrup. It’s even served in a builders mug (or a thermos flask if you’re sharing).
Keeping a Clear Head – an essential part of opening a bar, this part of the menu is dedicated to booze free drinks like their in-house kombucha, and one which mixes coconut cream, pineapple, lime and salt.
It’s called the Pina con Nada.
NOTE: Callooh Callay’s new bar menu will be available from April 10th. You can find out more and make a booking at their website right HERE.
