At Home Kitchen, you’ll leave with a full stomach and a slightly fuller sense of humanity, too.
Opening on September 11th, its mission is to help end homelessness, which seems far too ambitious to be realistic, and far too commendable to fault them for. It’s going to open up in the space left by Odettes in Primrose Hill, which finally closed the shutters for good after a solid 16 years in the business – and step one of their plan is to staff the place almost entirely with homeless people. They’ll not only provide employment, but also training and support so that the staff can hopefully leave with a qualification.
A couple of questions you might have: 1) If they’re homeless, are they just going to be thrust out onto the street at the end of a shift, or what? Well, the idea is that anyone without a permanent residence, who could be sleeping in shelters, hostels, sofas, or – yes – streets. The whole point of this enterprise is to prevent that though. 2) Not to be awkward, but is the food here actually going to be good? Well, to be blunt, yes. This isn’t going to be a cafe, or some nice-idea-but-average-food kind of place. This is aiming squarely at the fine-dining market. The man running the show in the kitchen will be none other than Adam Simmonds, who has won multiple Michelin Stars as well as the Great British Menu.
Speaking of menus, you can expect the likes of a full-on seven course tasting menu, or an a la carte offering of duck Terrines with celeriac & mustard; toasted barley with fermented celeriac, chervil & summer truffle; and egg custard tart with rhubarb & nutmeg ice cream. There are already two more Home Kitchens planned, in both Brighton and San Francisco…
…so hopefully there’ll be serving up a lot of fresh starts.
