Los Mochis

Los Mochis London City

Our capital is once again donning its most impressively cosmopolitan hat, and preparing for the arrival of a rather splendid new Mexican-Japanese restaurant. From a Finnish founder. In Liverpool Street.

It’s called Los Mochis London City, and it’s the bigger sibling to the original Los Mochis in Notting Hill (which has one of London’s best hidden restaurants inside it). And all of this global-cross pollination is open now.

It’s the work of restaurateur Markus Thesleff (also behind sleek cocktail joint Viajante87), and his plans for the place are pretty damn grand. On arrival, down on the ground floor people will be greeted by a 24ft handpainted mural by Mexican artist, Tellaeche, before stepping into a dedicated elevator and being whisked up to the 9th floor. And there? They’ll find a vast, 14,000sqft playground of food, with a restaurant, two bars, a couple of private dining rooms, and a 3,000sqft terrace overlooking half the city.

Let’s start with the restaurant. You’ll know it because it’s the one with the 12m custom willow tunnel sculpture (by artist Cherry Chung) in it. It’s also where the Mexican-Japanese food is being served up via both a sushi bar and a robota grill, with the likes of truffle guacamole on crispy rice; 15 different Kushiyaki grilled skewers charred over open fire; spicy hiramasa maki; and make-your-own tacos with Wagyu Grade 5 tomahawk steaks & whole roasted king crab legs.

Then there are those bars. There’s the main agaveria, which will have one of the largest selections of rare tequilas & mezcals in Europe that will be poured into some quite lovely cocktails, such as the Los Mochis Tommy’s (tequila, lime, agave, chilli & togarashi salt) and Mezcal Espresso Martini (mezcal, espresso, coffee liqueur). Of course, they’ll also have a healthy selection of wine & sake, too. And then there’s the other bar, outside on that terrace. It’s going to be a Mexican-style haven, with hand painted Mexican Talavera tiles & cacti looking out over St Paul’s and The Gherkin. Oh, and it’ll have a 3am late license.

Very cosmopolitan indeed.
