For anyone hoping to complete the final square on their Cosmopolitan City Bingo Card, we have good news: London’s about to get a Japanese omakase restaurant …from Lebanon.
Mayha is going to be the sister to a restaurant of the same name in Beirut, which is run by the excellently named Nothing But Love Group (who are behind a good portion of some Beirut’s finest food and drinks spots like The Backburner, Skirt, and Maryool). And the location they’ve locked in here – down on Marylebone’s Chiltern Street – speaks to their ambition.
Doing the business in the kitchen are chefs Jurek Wasio and Yuichi Nakaya, who’ll be making the trip over from the Beirut Mayha. We’re still awaiting specific dish news, but the omakase (essentially a highly personal tasting menu from chefs that changes regularly) will strive to feature impeccable local ingredients and seafood from their trusted Japanese suppliers, so you can safely assume the eating experience will be pretty premium (and cost that way too). On the drinking end of the equation, you’ll be well quenched with sakes, fine wines and rare spirits.
As for the venue itself: the action will occur over two levels with the omakase antics on the ground floor where you’ll be perched up around a curved stone counter with front row seats to the cooking and prep. Meanwhile, the pre and post dinner discussion and drinks (those brought to you from a scorched timber bar) will be held downstairs in a ‘hidden’ courtyard, which you’ll be able access via an attention-grabbing wrought-iron spiral staircase. Design buffs can also rub their hands gleefully over Lebanese-imported furnishings like hand-poured Blatt Chaya cement tiles and the main dining area’s centrepiece, a custom-built light installation.
Because every high-end omakase isn’t complete without one of those…
NOTE: Mayha opens in late September. We’ll be returning with the full low-down then. In the meantime, eager beavers can already enquire after reservations on their website right HERE. They’ll be doing lunch from 12.30-3.30pm and will have two dinner seatings from 6.30 and 9pm.
