Dishoom Is Opening Its First London Permit Room

After conquering the world of Indian small plates by, let’s be honest, basically inventing them, Dishoom is now turning its attention to something even more intoxicating: a standalone cocktail bar.

Permit Room is set to open in Notting Hill this Spring, and it’s following on from a trio that have already opened in Brighton, Cambridge & Oxford. They’ve gone down ridiculously well there, so West London locals should probably start limbering up their cocktail arms.

So what’s the lowdown? Permit Room – named after the official term for the Bombay drinking holes, where only permit-holders were allowed to consume alcohol – will be housed in the former Portobello Road Distillery; another nod to its Prohibition Era roots. The dining will be more casual than Dishoom’s other restaurants in Shoreditch, Kings Cross, Covent Garden and elsewhere. Instead of starters, mains and desserts, here diners will be encouraged to double down on snacks and sharing plates. Obviously there’ll be cocktails too, from the short and punchy Feni Martini to the long and whistle-whetting Kiwi Colada Shimmy.

In case you need another reason to get excited about this new addition to the Dishoom empire, Permit Room will be open from 8am until 11pm. So in a perfect world, you could scratch your bacon naan itch in the morning (and get one of the best breakfasts in London in the process), pop in for a sweet-malai toast mid-afternoon, then come back for short and punchy cocktails in the evening.

Talk about a dream day.

NOTE: Permit Room is set to open this spring. We’ll be back then with the full scoop, but in the meantime you can keep an eye on the Permit Room website.
