After impressing everyone mightily in North London with the Tamil Prince and the Tamil Crown—a pair of South Indian-style restaurants that share a laid-back gastropub vibe—the team has decided to open a third spot in this delicious trifecta: Tamila, which will cut the ribbon next month in Clapham.
So yes, the moment they go south of the river, they lose the royal titles. Suspicious? Maybe. But hopefully, it’s only because the food is the real king here.
This new spot will be on the Battersea end of the neighbourhood, sitting on Northcote Road, just a stone’s throw from Northcote Records and Ploussard. This time around, they’re moving away from the gastropub aesthetic into more of a fast-casual space. The Tamila concept has already been road-tested over at Hackney Bridge in a small food stall, so this will basically just be a much bigger version of that.
On the menu, they’ll be playing all the hits: roti, curries, tandoor specials, you name it. Alongside that, there’ll be garlic coriander naan, kulcha naan, and peshwari sitting next to the flaky roti they’ve become known for. Other highlights include a dedicated dosa section (chilli cheese, mutton uttapam, and masala dosa); a large snack selection featuring chicken lollipops, fried baby sweetcorn, and gobi 65; and masala poori (wheat flour puffed fried bread served with coconut chutney and potato masala).
As for drinks, expect a cocktail list featuring their The Gunpowder Margarita, Tamil Negroni, and Charcoal Old Fashioned, alongside a house Tamila lager and a concise selection of draught wine. It’s all designed to pair with the relatively vibrant flavours on the menu.
Hopefully, this will turn out to be be one of Clapham’s new crowning glories.
