The Knave of Clubs

Historic East End boozer The Knave of Clubs is getting a full reboot this Spring, reopening as a traditional pub on the ground floor, and a slightly more formal restaurant upstairs.

But don’t worry, it won’t be a jack of all trades.

That’s because the team involved are a highly talented bunch who have assembled, Avengers-style, to create what’s probably the Platonic ideal of a local. They are: James Dye (co-owner of The Camberwell Arms, Frank’s, and most recently the London Fields wine bar Bambi), Benjy Leibowitz (who comes here from NYC’s NoMad and the illustrious group behind restaurants like Gymkhana and Lyle’s), and, heading up the kitchen, Patrick Powell (whose next move has been highly anticipated after moving on from his critically acclaimed relaunch of The Midland Grand Dining Room).

The plan is to restore the Grade II listed building to its former glory as a quintessential boozer, after 30 years moonlighting as a French restaurant. Historic tiling and vast mirrors will wrap around the main bar space and open kitchen, with cosy banquette seating lining the walls. There’ll be cask ales, Guinness and the newly revived Double Diamond on the taps. But the Gallic spirit will still linger on thanks to a centrepiece rotisserie grill, where you’ll see the Knave’s signature dish roasting away with potatoes sizzling in chicken fat at the bottom.

For smaller snacks, there’ll be upmarket pub classics like venison sausage rolls and prawn scotch eggs with chilli jam, as well as pastrami and grilled cheese sandwiches on at lunchtimes throughout the week. And because it wouldn’t be a traditional pub without a roast, you can expect that to be a weekly highlight with porchetta, beef and rotisserie chicken on offer.

The main restaurant, One Club Row, is set to open on the first floor sometime later in March, but there are another two floors to the pub above that…

…so who knows what else is on the cards.

NOTE: The Knave of Clubs is set to reopen on 27th February, with One Club Row following sometime in March. You can find out more on The Knave of Clubs website.
