Barullo | Liverpool Street Spanish Restaurant & Speakeasy
There are restaurants with great cocktail bars.
And there are restaurants with acclaimed speakeasies that make bespoke cocktails hidden below them.
Barullo is one of the latter.
It comes to us from Victor Garvey, who also runs the beachy Spanish Soho spot that is Rambla. This Aldgate venue has a slightly moodier vibe, with Mediterranean tiling offset by dark blue walls and large booth seating. And despite the speakeasy below it, there’s a cocktail bar in the corner upstairs, too.
For the menu, Garvey has thankfully taken the slightly insane step of *not making it a tapas restaurant. Which means that the dishes start with Spanish cheese & charcuterie on sourdough (everything from acorn-fed Jamon Bellota to pungent & crumbly Valdeon Blue), then moves onto starters like seared tuna with avocado & truffle; and warm duck confit with olive & rosemary.
For the mains, you can expect three types of paella; a little smoked lamb belly with black garlic; octopus with saffron potato mousseline; and a gigantic tomahawk ribeye steak with Jerusalem artichoke puree & confit piquillo peppers.
Of course, then there’s the speakeasy we mentioned. It’s called BYOC, and it’s an offshoot of the now-famous hidden Covent Garden bar – you take in your own bottle of booze, and the barkeeps will mix it up into as many bespoke cocktails as you like (within your two hour slot) using their own juices, tinctures, bitters, herbs, and mixers. And, because the restaurant and the bar come as a package deal, Victor Garvey owns it too.
Guess he really is the Victor.
