Making jokes about Austria is very much like taking a stroll on the country’s Grossglockner mountain: it’s a slippery slope, and there’s a long way to fall.
The process can begin innocently enough with “wiener” gags and wisecracks about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cleaning lady, but it always descends rapidly into that Adolf Hitler / Josef Fritzel danger zone which we obviously have no intention of going into… yet.
So instead allow us to introduce you to Boopshi’s, a new Austrian restaurant opening just off Goodge Street today, by pointing out that crisp apple strudels and schnitzel with noodles were three of Maria von Trapp’s favourite things! However given that she also loved doorbells, kettles and gloves you’d be firmly advised to ignore her personal preferences and instead head along to Boopshi’s to make up your own mind.

To give you an idea of what to expect on arrival, imagine an alpine-themed chalet staffed by yodeling, lederhosen-wearing waiters and you’ll be picturing exactly the route that Boopshi’s owners have decided not to take. Because instead of drowning out the quality of their grandparents’ Viennese recipes with novelty, owners Ed and Ben Robson have gone for a sleek, minimalist decor of wooden chairs and long white tables, with a moodily-lit cocktail bar downstairs in the basement serving pre and post-dinner drinks.
Speaking of drinks you’ll find a selection of Viennese beers, a variety of spritzers, prosecco on tap and a choice of Austrian cocktails made using the brothers’ very own handmade sherbets. And to eat: shareable plates which include frittaten; cold meat platters; schnitzels; bratwurst and, for dessert, kaiserschmarrns (a cross between a waffle and a pancake), poppy seed tarts and apple strudel…
