Boxcar might be the first solo restaurant venture from founder Barry Hirst…
But it’s already on the right tracks.
It’s an airy, bi-level space occupying a terraced Marylebone townhouse, from which it will be running three not entirely unrelated operations: a quality butchers, a deli, and a grill restaurant that mercilessly exploits the first two to serve up tasty grub made from top-notch, ethically sourced, all-British meat.
Allow us to briefly trim, bone and flesh those out for you…
Taking up residence on the basement floor, the butchers will be a one-stop shop for quality meat – sourced directly from farms and local suppliers committed to ethical rearing – as well as a place for advice on how best to cook the various cuts, and what to look for when buying. There’ll also be regular masterclasses where the experts will introduce you to everything from butchery to cooking the perfect steak.
Open from 7am, this will be the spot to grab a quick bite, from roasted pork baps to pies and pastries – as well as a convenient store for marinades, cheese and charcuterie, both artisan and house-made. If you pop in for breakfast, you can grab a treacle-cured bacon sandwich, or even an upcoming breakfast doughnut (with poached eggs, bacon, and injected hollandaise). At lunch, things move up a gear into pie & sausage roll territory.
Spread over both floors with an al fresco patio and a basement level that doubles as a private dining room, it’s an expansive space decked out with exposed natural wood, copper accents and slate grey tiling in a throwback to traditional British butchers. Here they’re serving up a simple menu of three signature dishes; steak & chips (250g of sirloin for £15), a burger, and – plot twist! – a vegetarian option, while the barkeeps are throwing together classic cocktails and pouring from a slick wine and beer selection.
If you fancy going off the rails.
