In many ways, the cruellest of food stuffs, being so delicious and yet so goddamn drippy.
So the news that you can now enjoy the especially delicious ones from street food outfit Breddos Tacos in the comfort of their first permanent home (with permanent plates and napkins) is pretty momentous.
This is reflected in their shiny new moniker, Breddos Taqueria – which, as you might have guessed, means “the place where tacos are made”. But slightly catchier.
In this case, the tacos being made have fillings like Kung Pao chicken, fried pork belly and crunchy nut sweetbreads with pea mole and XO. These star alongside new dishes like braised pig skin, sea urchin tostadas and big sharers like the short rib birria, a spicy stew served with beef fat tortillas. The Breddos bros are pretty big on research and authenticity, having tirelessly gathered recipes and inspiration from their travels across Mexico and the USA (well, someone’s got to do it). So it’s only right that their new home has its very own Mexican volcanic stone mill, on which they prepare their home-made tortillas – which they also use to make tlayudas; a sort of tortilla pizza, which they top with shredded Chipotle chicken, avocado and Mexican herbs.
And to wash it all down? There’s wine on tap, margaritas and tequilas, and an impressively extensive list of mezcals for you to peruse, and perhaps tirelessly research yourself…
And once you’ve finished browsing the menu, you can browse their vinyl collection and request your favourites on their vintage record player, from Portishead to Stevie Wonder.
Now that’s soul food.
