Brother Marcus Angel

Brother Marcus Angel | Islington Brunch & Mezze Spot

Brother Marcus was born in Balham back in 2016.

Fast forward a few years, and the Angel arm of this small but steadily growing chain of Eastern Mediterranean restaurants (now also in Spitalfields and Borough Yards) is becoming a bit of a local legend. Promising to bring people together over good times and delicious food, Brother Marcus was created by three best friends, and that warming backstory is reflected in this relaxed but vibrant restaurant’s atmosphere, where every patron is treated like one of the family.

Considered a brunch haven, it would be a shame not to hit this part of the menu if the timing is right. The Harissa Eggs and Sweet Potato Fritters are Brother Marcus classics – add bacon or sausage if you’re feeling carnivorous. All main brunch dishes can be enhanced even further with one nod to your waiter: can we go bottomless? Four small words with so much power. Because as it turns out, while these dishes all taste delicious on their own… they all pair very well with limitless Prosecco, cocktails or beers.

But there’s more than just brunch on offer at this happy place. These days the restaurant is just as revered for its small plates and mezze delicacies, as well as the beautifully descriptive ‘Rips and Dips’ – all ideal for tearing and sharing. You’ll want to order multiples of certain dishes, like the scallops in anchovy butter and the lamb croquettes. The restaurant was founded on friendship but food this moreish is difficult to share. Check all rifts at the door and perhaps leave any truly greedy friends at home…

The drinks menu, split by day and evening, has just as much front as the food, with an impressive cocktail line-up. The Levanta Bellini with kiwi purée and lavender is particularly delicious, as is the Mylonas Spritzer; a heady mix of vodka, elderflower liqueur, rosé and Greek mountain tea – good health to all.

Oh and if you are interested in who this chap Marcus really is, check out the website for a rather endearing lowdown. They say good food comes from a place of love – and that’s certainly the case here.
