Sometimes you want to break out of the same old daily grind.
Thankfully, there’s a simpler solution than buying a sports car, emigrating or making a regrettable tattoo choice: simply head down to Clerkenwell to find yourself in a completely new Grind instead.
As the most ambitious offering yet from the team behind Shoreditch Grind (…and five other successful branches…and a roastery…and a recording studio), it could easily become a daily habit. Taking up residence in a former warehouse towards the Barbican end of Old Street, the all-day restaurant & bar has a glamorous mid-century throwback feel, with a colour scheme that could be described as “Instagram”. Navy herringbone-panelled walls are propped up by rosy pink velvet banquettes with brass fittings, accompanied by two sweeping bars in white and green marble and capped off by a bespoke piece of neon wall art from Canadian tattoo artist Curt Montgomery.
All this makes up the ground floor, which is where they serve up:
…which for breakfast includes dishes like one-pan eggs, and at weekends, shmancier dishes like buttermilk pancakes with strawberries and coconut. For lunch and dinner, they’ve got heavy-duty mains like lamb rump with artichoke and peas, and smoky charred cauliflower with tofu aioli – and they’re putting their charcoal oven to good use, firing up for flat iron steak and pork chop with chilli. Leading us nicely on to…
Of course with the Grind roastery just down the road, you’ll still be getting that praise-showered coffee fix, and you can also find freshly squeezed juices and cold presses as part of the all-day menu.
But come the evening, you’ll want to head downstairs to their basement bar, where you can sample some classic Grind cocktails (including a mean espresso martini), and bop your head to music spun by Grind-approved collaborators and guests from the recording studio.
After all, what’s a bar without a little bump ’n’ Grind?
