As Alexander Graham Bell once said ‘When one Flor closes, another door opens…’
And that door is to Eric’s Bakery, the new incoming East Dulwich eatery from Helen Evans…
Evans – who’s travelled far and wide to master her baking skills (she’s also worked at bakeries in Melbourne and Lima) – was the ex-Head Baker at Flor, which was widely-regarded as one of the best bakeries in London. We use the word ‘was’ with great sadness because Flor served its final Danish last month and closed for good. As it goes in the circle of life though, it’s not all doom and gloom, and the end of Flor has paved the way for the start of Eric’s Bakery, which, if everything goes according to plan, should be opening in time for Easter.
If you’ve ever been around the Spa Terminus area, or at least within smelling distance, then you’ll know all about Flor, it’s Danishes (blue cheese and pumpkin and Yorkshire rhubarb and vanilla), double-baked almond croissants, brioche buns, and more. Evans masterminded them all and, will be bringing even more golden goodies to her new site.
She’ll also be sharing some of her baking wisdom at thorough classes teaching you how to make everything from puff pastry to croissants, and of course sourdough (if you missed out on the sourdough craze of ‘20-21, it’s still not too late…).
The venue itself is still in the needs-a-paint-and-some-furniture phase, but at least she’s found one (on 20 Upland Road in East Dulwich, to be exact). She’s also managed to raise over £8000 in crowdfunding to afford the tools (a bread mixer and dough sheeter) needed to nurture the perfect sourdough, fruit loaves, breakfast pastries, doughnuts and the rest. Donations are still welcome and you can score things like an Eric’s croissant, coffee and tote bag in return for your generosity if you do.
