Say hello to Chris Denney.
He’s the driving force behind new Notting Hill restaurant Fiend, and is one of those chefs who seems to somehow thrive in the ultra-high-pressure work environment of the modern kitchen, using it to fuel his creativity without wanting to curl up in a ball and hide. At least not too often.
After working at a 3-Michelin Star restaurant in Italy he opened 108 Garage – a brief shining light in Notting Hill’s food scene, where his cooking attracted some truly outstanding reviews, but which sadly closed quite unexpectedly. But now he’s back with Fiend, which comprises a ground floor restaurant and a subterranean lounge space beneath. Up top, everything’s centred around the open kitchen, where you can see Denney himself ply his meticulous trade from the comfort of a leather banquette. While down below you can sink into a low-lit velvet chair and knock back a cocktail from the bespoke rosewood bar.
Now, the all-important menu. It comes either as a la carte or as a six-course set menu, if you feel like putting yourself in the chef’s capable hands for the evening. Dishes include inventive combinations like kurobata pork belly with blood peach & eel glaze, or bbq horse mackerel with mint & smoked tomato. There are little nods towards luxury, with wagyu beef salami, or imperial caviar, as well as deferences to craven carnality in the form of Jacob’s ladder beef with dill pickle & bone marrow. Whatever you want, it’s probably got it.
As for the drinks? The cocktails keep things safer, with a short list of martinis (the Tuxedo throws a little absinthe & lemon into the gin) some highballs (the Kyoto collins involves grapefruit and yuzu sake) and shorts, which have a playful hybrid ‘negroni sbagliato’ that blends Campari with sparkling wine. The wine list is a highly curated short story all about Old World wines, but you can find a couple of skin contact bottles from Austria & Slovenia if you fancy stretching your legs…
