Forza Win | Italian Restaurant in a Peckham Warehouse
1. (noun) Literally meaning “force” in Italian; colloquially used as an expression of encouragement.
But more than that, it’s also a lauded Italian restaurant which started out as a rooftop popup, but is now – as you might expect – permanently installed inside an old cash & carry warehouse in Peckham.
A vast, double-height room, the space itself has been kept dashingly simple, with tables set in front of a magnificent marble topped bar, behind which head chef Michael Lavery and the team work their magic in an open kitchen backed by white tiling and exposed copper piping. Everything else has been kept as a rustic, blank canvas, with whitewashed brick walls, simple retro lighting, and the occasional flash of greenery.
It’s upon this blank canvas that they’re laying their mighty fine food down. The whole concept started with rooftop pizzas, before moving on to huge pots of communal fondue; pasta supper clubs; and now, a fully fledged à la carte menu. Crowd pleasing as hell, it spans the likes of clams and ‘Nduja broth; sausage and fennel pappardelle; cod and monk’s beard with Amalfi lemon; and braised lamb shank with butterbeans. And the cherries on top? Desserts like blood orange and chocolate tart, custardo (“custard”), and a risotto (“risotto”) rice pudding.
And that’s all counterbalanced rather nicely by a weekly changing beer selection, a thoughtful pick of biodynamic and organic Italian wines, classic Italian cocktails like spritzes and negronis, and a set of Amaro digestifs.
2. (int.) Stone-cold classic dad joke. “Are you going to Forza Win tonight?”
“Forza last time, yes.”
