Grain Store

Grain Store | Kings Cross

NOTE: Sadly, Grain Store has now closed.

There have been some great double acts over the years.

Lennon and McCartney. Morecambe and Wise. Ben and Jerry.

Ashleigh and Pudsey.

And now there’s a new one – Bruno Loubet and Tony Conigliaro.

While this doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as well as ‘Kylie and Jason’, the duo – one a critically acclaimed chef and restaurateur, the other a Willy Wonka-esque legend of the cocktailing world – are the epicurean equivalent of Batman and Robin.

Only with tighter pants.

Following up on the success of their last collaboration – the award-winning Zetter Townhouse – they open the doors to Grain Store.

A vast, bright and airy space, it combines the industrial pairing of exposed brickwork and metal piping with a sort of laid back, summery French farmhouse vibe. But that could be because it’s summer: it may feel different in the cold, dark chokehold of winter.

Starsky and Hutch.

Accompanying the bar’s all-day dining menu (hot dogs, fried spicy corn) are some of the latest creations from Tony C’s Drinks Lab, like Pumpkin & Maple Syrup Bellinis, Truffle Martinis and Butter & Hay Champagne.

Pretty weird.

The eclectic restaurant menu – randomly inspired by Bruno’s global travels – includes starters like seared asparagus, baked beets and chilled lobster ‘Bloody Mary’.  For mains you can choose from dishes like Mexican-style corn and quinoa tamale with salsa and sticky pork belly, and confit lamb with mint pickled cucumbers and snowball turnips. And for pudding: homemade ice-cream, waffles, and white chocolate rice crispy with dark chocolate mousse.

In addition there are daily Josper Grill specials, plus the highly advisable option of leaving your fate in the chefs’ hands by choosing a ‘surprise’ menu of either a five course lunch (£30/head), or a 6 course dinner (£35/head).

Laurel and Hardy. Sonny and Cher. Salt and Peppa.

Your turn.

NOTE: The Grain Store is sadly now closed.
