Just when Battersea’s restaurant scene was beginning to plateau…
…something new has Hatched.
Perched on St. John’s Hill in the run-up to Clapham Junction, it’s entirely out of place amongst the pubs and coffee shops. Because Hatched is a Michelin-recommended, envelope-pushing restaurant, serving Modern European small plates in warm, pared-back surroundings.
Speaking to the Studio Williams cutlery website, chef Shane Williams describes himself as “not a cutlery expert”. But he also claims that a being a good chef comes down to “the love and care that goes into the preparation of every dish you make.” And that’s very much evident in everything you’ll be served at Hatched.
First, though, you’ll need to find it. Its grey tiled facade is marked only by a triangle, while inside you’ll spot a long sleeve of a space, dominated by a bustling open kitchen.
It’s in here that Shane and his team marshal an almost daily-changing menu. Visiting dishes (venison haunch with celeriac, tagliatelle with Cornish langoustine, pickled mussels with bouillabaisse mayo) intermingle with Hatched classics, from the crispy beef arancini to start, to the outrageously indulgent pain perdu for dessert – caramelised French toast served with vanilla ice cream and honeycomb. Each dish is beautifully delivered, with stand-out flavours that’ll stay with you.
To go with it all is a highly drinkable wine and cocktail list, and it’s definitely worth keeping their Sunday roasts in your little black book for a special occasion.
You know, a once-a-week kind of treat.
NOTE: Hatched is currently open for dinner Thursday-Saturday, and every other Wednesday. You can also head in for brunch Fri & Sat, and Sunday lunch. You can find out more, and book a table, HERE.
