Excellent news: the team at Kricket have now officially opened their fourth site, this time over in Shoreditch. Although on the downside, we’ve completely run out of fresh cricket-related puns to open with, and frankly we’re stumped.
But the fact is the Kricket team are doing something very, very right. Their innovative & widely acclaimed modern Indian concept has grown from a fledgling pop-up in a shipping container to a mini empire of some of the city’s hottest bars & restaurants in just a few short years, and it’s largely thanks to the fact that they somehow balance the delicate trifecta of delicious, deeply considered food; disarmingly clever cocktails; and effortlessly cool spaces (that, we suspect, actually took a lot of effort).
Their latest opening on Charlotte Road brings all of that to Shoreditch, in a huge and genuinely stunning new space.
If you know Shoreditch, you’ll know this is one of those so-thin-it’s-almost-an-alley-type passages just off Great Eastern Street. The building is blessed with high ceilings, steel pillars, and the kind of natural light that’s usually wasted on marketing agencies. There are vintage herringbone floors, a semi-draped glass ceiling that adds a soft, diffused glow to the room, and a layout that strikes a nice balance between buzz and intimacy.
As for the food: Kricket’s greatest hits are present and correct—crispy samphire pakoras with tamarind; the cult-classic Keralan fried chicken—but there are also new dishes on the menu, designed specifically for the Shoreditch site. They’re still tinkering with those, but safe to say they haven’t forgotten how to surprise people.
There’s also a beautiful horseshoe bar serving drinks like the Dhuarita (tequila, pomegranate, jaggery & rose) and the vodka-based Aam Standard, which pairs mango and cardamom with oxymel—an ancient honey-and-vinegar concoction that may or may not actually cure all known hangovers.
All told, it’s another strong innings from the Kricket team.
