Ladbroke Hall | A highly ambitious ‘creative space’ in Notting Hill
Some hugely exciting news for art lovers living in Notting Hill: Ladbroke Hall is being reincarnated this Spring.
In saying that, it’s hugely exciting news for all arts lovers in London. Some will just have to travel further than others…
First things first then: Why is this hugely exciting news? The building itself, Ladbroke Hall – Grade-II listed, 100 years old, and first built as the HQ/car showroom for Sunbeam Talbot Motor Company – has recently been given a dream £30m makeover courtesy of Carpenters Workshop Gallery founders Loïc Le Gaillard and Julien Lombrail, who have called upon some the most accomplished minds in design: Vincenzo De Cotiis, Michèle Lamy and Sir David Adjaye. This all-star architect team have transformed Ladbroke Hall into a modern art mecca that’ll have work displayed from Rick Owens, Maarten Baas, Niko Koronis, Studio Drift and Atelier Van Lieshout, among others (just know that these are big, big names in the world of contemporary art and design), plus early solo shows from Yinka Ilori and Adjaye himself (only fair that he gets first dibs, considering he had a hand in designing in the place…).
Ladbroke Hall won’t be just an art gallery, though, that’s not enough in this day and age. It’ll be more of an ‘art ecosystem’, meaning that, beyond modern, functional art, the cutting edge ideas will extend to other creative spheres like dining and drinking. So on that form, there’ll be a restaurant – designed by De Cotiis – which will feature an awe-inspiring head-turner of a chandelier in the 60-cover dining room, original art from Christopher Le Brun and its own private garden (that will be put to good use in the menu, which hasn’t yet been announced). While there’s no shortage of amazing restaurants in Notting Hill, this is probably the first that’ll be growing the ingredients on your plate as well as cooking them.
The bar/lounge, named ‘Lamyland’, meanwhile, has been left up to Michèle Lamy’s devices (no bad thing; she’s an icon in French fashion and culture, and her old restaurant in LA ‘Les Deux Cafes’ was one of Hollywood’s hippest hot spots before it closed). Her vision is for it to be an-all day hangout with pop-up art installations, a recording studio and a strong focus on music.
And Ladbroke Hall isn’t finished there. The venue will also have a 12,000sf landscaped garden, a wine cellar and further spaces for events, performances, film screenings and workshops. So truthfully, it’s also hugely exciting news for food and drink fans, music people… even horticulturalists.
NOTE: Ladbroke Hall is set to open in Spring. The exact date is yet to be announced, but for more details you can check their website here (or alternatively, look at their Instagram).
