You wouldn’t think that Scotland contains many of the best restaurants in the world.
And you’d be right.
However old Caledonia’s natural larder of beef, fish, fruit, vegetables and wild game is in high demand around the world, and when placed in the hands of a talented chef or two the results can be wonderful.
Which is why we shid aw gi’ a warm “lang may yer lum reek” tae The Wild Game Co, a three-man troop of kilted Scotsmen who moved to London from Ardgay in order to sell their family’s wild game from a Broadway Market stall; who went on to serve up nine-course Scottish tasting menus at their crowd-pleasing pop up Struie Road; who then won ‘Street Food of the Year’ at The Young British Foodies Awards; and who have swung open the doors to their permanent Fitzrovian home: Mac & Wild.
Head along to Mac & Wild, and you’ll find –
1) A two-floor space with original hardwood floors; a commissioned photographic series of a traditional game hunt on their Scottish farm; and a collection of handmade tables crafted from the same fallen tree. Plus,
2) A selection of European wines and Scottish craft beers; over 120 bottles of single malt whisky; three pre-batched cocktails known affectionately (and actually) as ‘The Forager’, ‘Auld Pal’ and ‘The Ginger Laddie’; and,
3) Full Scottish breakfasts with tattie scones and bone marrow beans; Sunday sharing roasts; venison chateaubriand; ‘wilderness chips’ with whisky-lager sauce and candied bacon; and “Haggis Pops”, which are basically like normal lollipops…
…in more fewer ways than one.
NOTE: Mac & Wild Fitzrovia is open for lunch and dinner, Monday – Saturday, plus brunch on weekends. You can reserve a table online right HERE.
