And now, a short list of rhetorical questions:
Is water wet?
Is The Pope Catholic?
Is the food at Merchants Tavern bloody delicious?
And when you have the culinary superteam of Angela Hartnett & head chef Neil Borthwick behind you, it’s not tricky to see why.
Merchant’s Tavern sits just off Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch, and features a beautiful mid-century brick & leather design, with dashes of neon, a huge open kitchen, and log fire all flooded by light from the skylights. The space big, too. So big that the huge C-shaped leather sofas curling around the tables scattered around the place – any of which would fill the average living room – almost seem innocuous.
The menu is a modern European affair, covering everything from mussels with buttered cider; to devilled quail; to Queen scallops with green apple & lime; to polpette al sugo (that’s meatballs with a tomato sauce, to you). And that’s just for starters. Literally.
For the mains, you can score a Kleftiko – a Greek dish in which an entire leg of lamb is sealed in a pastry parcel and cooked low & slow; or some lobster spaghettini; an ember-baked celeriac with shiro miso & hazelnuts; or even a gigantic duck ragu papardelle big enough for two to share.
For brunch, they’ve loaded their mid-morning weekend menu with goods like ‘dirty’ bacon sandwich; ricotta pancakes crowned with berry compote; or waffles & crisp, perfectly seasoned fried chicken.
To wash all that down, there are the obligatory cocktails including their Merchant’s Mule made with vodka and homemade rhubarb shrub; and the Corpse Reviver #2 (packing gin, Lillet Blanc, and absinthe). The counterbalancing coffees all come from Ozone, and there are specialist teas and freshly squeezed juices to round it all out – which sounds pretty good, right?
But we all know that answer to that.
