Welcome to Mere.
It’s actually pronounced ‘Mary’. But that’s a mere detail.
Especially when you consider that it’s the first restaurant from Monica Galetti, whose years of work as both Michel Roux Jr’s sous-chef and Masterchef’s intimidatingly skilled judge make her probably the most qualified person in the world not to have their own restaurant.
Until now, of course.
Confidently dropped on Charlotte “London’s restaurant epicentre” Street, the interior bleeds class, with muted colours, understated lighting, and traditional Samoan artwork on the walls (Monica was born there). It’s split into two halves, with a ground floor bar, and a basement restaurants, in the latter of which you’ll find:
The menu is pretty concise, with six choices per course (which will, of course, rotate seasonally) including starters like black scallop curry with kumquat & puffed rice; mains such as roast squab breast, confit squab leg, and Ras el Hanout (a North African spice mix); and for dessert a blood orange mousse with lemon confit and ‘sparkling grapefruit’. The wine will be handled by Monica’s husband/sommelier/ David Galetti …but the booze doesn’t stop there, because there are also,
At the ground floor bar, the mixeds range from the classic (Margaritas, etc.) to the novel, with house numbers including the vodka, lime, sage, & Lillet-blending Sauvelle Martini, and the Havana Club-meets-cranberries-and-violet-syrup Rum Passion.
After which you’ll be pronouncing a lot more things wrong.
