Mike’s Peckham

Mike’s something of a hidden gem.

Not that it’s hard to find, or that the owners are trying to be subtle about it in any way. It’s just that… you don’t usually expect to find world-class pizza in a Peckham warehouse.

The venue comes to us from the team behind Frank’s Cafe, which boasts a similarly impressive quality:expectation ratio to the uninitiated. You’ll find it in the huge, former grain storage space off Copeland Park where, like previous tenants Forza Win, they’ve kept things totally stripped-down and simple. It’s light, spacious, and boasts no frills whatsoever – at least as far as furnishings are concerned. The food is another story.

That part all comes courtesy of one Gabriele Bonci, who is known as “the Michelangelo of pizza” in his native Italy. He’s one of those obsessive, creative, hyper-meticulous chefs who makes everyone else look like an apathetic layabout. His flour is a proprietary blend, stone-milled in Piedmont. His various sourdough starters date back as far as World War I. His dough rises for 72 hours, and has light bubbles punctuating a satisfyingly firm base. He’s amassed a cult following in Rome (where his original pizzeria is) along with regular TV appearances and profiles in Magazines like Vogue. He’s a legend in his own lifetime.

Here, he makes slow-fermented, twice-baked dough in square shapes, then generously lavishes them with all manner of toppings. The menu changes quite frequently, but you can expect ingredients like tropea onions, Turkish figs, peaches, Sicilian datterini tomatoes, burrata, salted chilli, and fiery Scotch bonnet ‘nduja. It all comes by the slice, and the idea is to get 3/4 different ones each (they’re huge, and very reasonably priced, starting at just £2.50).

There are Italian cocktails to go with it all, a short list of old world wines, craft beer and – should you want it – an entire litre of satisfyingly oaky Breton cider.

Like we said, not your typical Peckham warehouse.
