Un bellissimo ristorante italiano nel cuore di Mayfair.
That’s how you say “a beautiful Italian restaurant in the heart of Mayfair” in Italian. Which is what Nipotina is.
The latest project from serial hospitality whizz Samyukta Nair—whose portfolio already includes beloved Mayfair institutions like Jamavar and Bombay Bustle—has officially opened its doors on South Audley Street, just down the road from Farm Shop. It’s a fancy little corner of London, and Nipotina fits right in. But while it looks the part — think glowing red light on the terrace and plush pink walls – it’s also surprisingly relaxed.
Inside, the space flows smoothly from one dining area to the next. There’s an intimate vibe from the start, with a corridor entrance leading past the desk and a glimpse into the warmly lit dining room. The walls have a soft, curvaceous finish that feels seamless, the windows are bordered with glossy black tiles, and smooth soul music fills the air. At the moment, a perfectly festive Christmas tree decked out in red ribbons adds to the charm.
When it comes to the food, it’s all about nostalgic, hearty Italian fare. Head chef Somaia Hammad, who hails from Turin, has put together a menu inspired by her nonna’s recipes, her Northern Italian training, and her travels throughout Italy. Highlights include wood-fired dishes like garlic-roasted wild Scottish langoustines and a chargrilled T-bone to share, alongside handmade pasta like her grandmother’s Mafalda Ragù and Northern-style thin-crust pizzas. While the dishes aren’t wildly inventive, they’re safe, enjoyable, and elevated by the beautiful surroundings. The zucchini fritti, seabass, and ricotta tart (a light, lemony dessert dusted with icing sugar) stand out.
And then there’s the wine. Luca Dusi, the wine aficionado behind Shoreditch’s Passione Vino, has curated a vast, all-Italian list available by the glass, bottle, or carafe. For those with specific tastes, there are off-menu fine wines that can be sourced with the sommelier’s help. The cocktail menu adds a touch of theatre, with a house negroni stored in a clay amphora on the bar, ladled out with old-world flair. The Brezza Marina—a non-alcoholic tropical-leaning concoction—is also a winner.
It might be Mayfair-fancy, but it’s not too Mayfair-fancy, and if you order wisely, it’s not bank-breaking either.
