Fitzrovia’s Getting An Innovative Indian Restaurant With A Secret Speakeasy

Pali Hill and Bandra Bhai | Indian Restaurant And Cocktail Bar In Fitzrovia

Pali Hill is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Mumbai… and is about to become one of the newest restaurants in London.

Or at least it will be this coming Spring, when Azure Hospitality – one of India’s leading restaurant groups, with dozens of locations across the subcontinent – opens the doors to its first ever UK operation.

Why Pali Hill? Well, it’s a neighbourhood famed for the micro-societies which develop within its large residential blocks – families from across India all come together bringing their different regional cuisines. The result is a literal melting pot of culinary traditions, which produces some very exciting food.

The focus here will be small plates that reflect that culinary innovation, with a number of slightly bigger sharing dishes throw in. Head Chef Avinash Shashidhara (whose CV include both two Michelin-starred Hibiscus and ten years at The River Cafe) has designed a menu to include everything from poori sagu with spring peas & broad beans; to banana blossom with black chickpeas, coconut & lime; to a whole Parsi-style sea bream with coriander, mint and green chilli. The kitchen is also set to include a big central grill offering up the likes of razor clams with kokum juice & fresh coriander; and grilled middle white pork with sweet tamarind, bay, and fennel.

And that’s not the end of it either. In fact, we’re only half way. See, as well as a 60-cover restaurant, Azure are also opening a secret, unmarked, underground cocktail bar directly below the joint.

Head downstairs and through a secret door and you’ll find Bandra Bhai, a mysterious, low-lit drinkers, inspired by the illicit hangouts of India’s smuggling era. Here you’ll find Luke Ridge (previously of The Ivy Club and Dandelyan) turning inspirational Indian stories into delicious drinks like Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy, a drink of tropical coconut-washed rum and melon that’s inspired by “the king of Indian disco”.

NOTE: Pali Hill and Bandra Bhai is set to open Spring 2020. We’ll be back with the full scoop soon, however in the meantime you can keep an eye on their website here.
