Shaking up powder kegs is a bold move.
But one which can lead to some pretty impressive results, as the team who have taken over Powder Keg Diplomacy are out to prove. It’s the same folks who run WC in Clapham (the wine and charcuterie bar in a former public toilet), and now they’ve headed over to Battersea, stripped the bar of its diplomacy and rebooted it as Powderkeg.
A spacious bar and restaurant, Powderkeg combines aged wooden floorboards, subway tiles and high red leather booth seating with quirky touches, from vintage gramophones and elaborate floral murals to antique mirrors and stuffed grouse. Up front are bar stools and tables where you can survey the wine list, which – as you’d expect from the WC team – offers solid pickings of grape hooch by the glass or bottle. Stronger drinks come in the form of cocktails named after old English slang, like the Saucebox (a gossip), made with gin, Campari, rhubarb and ginger; and the Poked Up (embarrassed) with cognac, peach liqueur, egg white, honey and ginger. And with a 2am license, they’re confident you’ll enjoy them.
As you pass into the back, you’ll find a conservatory-style dining room, where you can tuck into pizzas from sister brand Joe Public. Their NYC-style pies come in 14″ and 20″ options, topped with the likes of mushrooms, crispy shallots and truffle oil; and the beef, sausage, bacon and pepperoni-loaded ‘Meat Lover’. And on weekends, you can score yourself a breakfast pizza; bubble waffles and bacon butties stuffed with tater tots alongside 90 minutes of bottomless booze.
Just don’t shake too much after that.
NOTE: POWDERKEG is open Mon-Thurs 5-12am, Fri 5pm-2am, Sat 10.30am-2am and Sun 11am-11pm. You can find out more and book a table or an area HERE.
